The Project

The project
aims to facilitate the integration and application of the course content,
stimulate critical thinking and reflection, and encourage autonomous learning.
You are required to use the skills and insights you are developing in this
course to conduct an in-depth assessment of one person's pronunciation. This
task will involve:
Group Work
You are
required to work in groups of three. Group work requires interpersonal skills,
maturity and responsibility. All three group members are required to work
collaboratively on each component of the project.
Data collection
Find a
cooperative person (preferably a secondary school student) whose pronunciation
you would like to work on. Record this person reading a short passage (see
sample). Note that clarity of the recording is crucial. Groups within a class
are encouraged to collect data from samples that vary in terms of background
(ethnicity, state).
Analysis of the Data
Transcribe the
recorded data. Analyse the transcription and diagnose the subject's
pronunciation difficulties. You will have to write generalisations of the
pronunciation difficulties you have discovered, and provide as many examples as
possible from the transcribed data. The following websites may prove useful for
downloading IPA fonts for your computer:
Findings
From the
pronunciation difficulties diagnosed, select two (or three) segmental or
suprasegmental aspects and discuss why you think these features of
pronunciation are important to correct
A Report
Write a report
of not more than 1,500 words covering the following aspects:
1.0 The Subject (include relevant
details, like L1, age, ethnic background, nationality etc.)
2.0 The Data (The Reading passage);
Orthographic and phonemic transcription
3.0 Analysis and discussion of
pronunciation features and problem (consonants or vowels)
4.0 Explanation of possible causes for
the pronunciation problem.
Note:
- Completed work must submitted in print and CD. Recordings must also be submitted.
- This is not a literature review, but if you do refer to the work of others, please acknowledge where appropriate.
- Because this is not a project that can be completed over a day or two, please start early, and adhere to the deadlines set by your lecturer. This will also help you to organise your work, and consult your lecturer at the various stages.
